Does Insurance Cover Breast Augmentation?

Unless your augmentation is part of reconstructive surgery, your insurance company is not going to cover it. Breast augmentation for cosmetic purposes is considered an elective procedure.

This means unless your surgery is specifically for reconstruction, you’ll need to pay the bill. This can include the surgeon’s fee, any facility costs, the fee for your anesthesia, the cost of your actual implants, the cost for any prescriptions needed for your recovery, the fee for the post-surgery garments, and the cost of your medical tests.

A further consideration is that it is not unusual to require multiple operations to achieve the look you want! It also isn’t impossible for you to need surgery again in the future, since breast implants are not guaranteed for life and sometimes rupture. Also, if you get an infection as a result of breast augmentation surgery, many insurance carriers will not cover that either.

How are you going to be able to afford all this? One idea is medical tourism. Medical tourism is the process of traveling to another country, usually in Africa, Asia, or South America, to get your breast augmentation surgery at a first class medical facility.

Even though you’ll then need to pay for your transportation and lodging, you may be able to save as much as 90% on your breast augmentation procedure. This can also be a good option if you need to get a second surgery or another surgery in the future. It is best to stay on in the foreign country for a couple weeks so that you will have access to your physician during recovery.
